To the parents of Denair Band students:
Welcome back!! The success we continue to enjoy is a direct reflection of the students and parents who participate in our music education program!
Throughout this year, you will be asked to log onto this Web site for ongoing communication from our band concerning upcoming rehearsals, concerts, and information. Along with these ensemble-related notices, we will also be posting pertinent and compelling information about the importance of music learning and the impact it has on your student.
The world of education is in a constant evolution, and you, as a responsible and concerned parent, must be apprised of the latest information gleaned from ongoing research; it will aid us in helping your students and others make wise choices in selecting classes that are certain to benefit their future.
You play an important role in everything you do. Please review this band manual carefully with your student.
Thank you for your support of music education at Denair!
In the interest of our students,

OBJECTIVES

The objective of the instrumental music program is to develop musical standards and encourage an appreciation and understanding of music. Each student will be given the opportunity to develop the ability to work effectively through the acquisition of traits such as industry, persistence, and the eagerness to grow. Through music education, the student will acquire knowledge, skills, and attitudes, which will help make him a more desirable member of society.

The Denair Music Department has five primary goals:

  1. Educational: To develop interested and discrimination listeners and provide a well-rounded musical background.

  2. Personal: To develop the sense of "We" not "I". Enforcement of band discipline and its ideals, principles, and rules of the organization. Student will remember that he represents his organization, school, and community AT ALL TIMES.

  3. Community: To lend color and atmosphere to certain school and community affairs, while promoting and enhancing the dignity and reputation of the Denair Bands at all events.

  4. Cultural: To continue the development of music appreciation and understanding through the study and performance of the best in band literature and curriculum.

  5. Recreational: To provide all students in the Denair High band with an opportunity for worthy use of leisure time, an emotional outlet, and positive social experiences.
It is also the hope of our organization that each band member receives a full musical education, which includes the teaching and learning of musical knowledge, while developing the personality and citizenship of each member of the band.

GENERAL CLASSROOM MANAGEMENT

  • Students will not chew gum, eat food or drink sodas/coffee in the band room.
  • Each student will maintain his or her own music folder throughout the school year.
  • Rehearsal begins at the 'downbeat' and posted rehearsal times.
  • Restroom use is allowed before rehearsals only
  • Missed performances are an automatic grade deduction at least one letter grade.
  • Missed graduation performances are an automatic deduction of two letter grades.
  • Students are required to have their instrument, music, reeds, sticks at EVERY rehearsal and performance. Non-participation is considered an "F" for the day.
  • Students will use self-control and common sense within the daily rehearsal and performance schedules.
The director reserves the right to use a variety of means necessary to ensure the above classroom management issues are followed. Parents will be contacted immediately if any of the above becomes habitually violated.

Grading Policies

Each band member begins the school year with an "A". It is each band member's responsibility and duty to maintain this grade throughout the school year. All grades are accumulative during the year.

Percussion Students

Each percussion student is required to have the following equipment during the course of the school year - many items are one-time purchases:

1 pair concert snare drum sticks
1 pair yarn mallets and/or bell mallets
1 pair tympani mallets
1 stick bag

TRAVEL EXPECTATIONS

One of the bonuses of being in the Denair Band revolves around our travel opportunities. When we accept an invitation to perform away from home, we also assume the responsibilities of being representatives of our band, our school, and our community. Your best behavior is now "the norm", and you will be asked to rise above it many times during a trip, displaying the ultimate in appropriate manners and personal deportment. There are no second chances at a first impression- the reputation of our band is in your hands. Treat it with the dignity it has earned...and deserves. We are counting on you!

BAND FUNRAISERS

Yes, in order to provide as many rewarding opportunities as we can, fundraising is a fact of life in the band world. Students can choose whether to fundraise or not with regards to our band activities.
Any fundraiser that a student participates in will be credited to their own band account and are good for one school year.
Students may raise funds to sponsor another student as well.
Any funds not used specifically for band trips or equipment are placed in a general operation budget and used for many of the following band items:
  • Senior scholarship - each band member x $50.00. Example 2006: $650.00
  • Student awards, ribbons, trophies, engraving: $425.00
  • Additional awards, snacks, etc: $125.00
  • Band hospitality food: $100.00
  • Trailer tires, maintenance: $150.00
Fundraising is only one small part of being a band parent and your most important contribution is your involvement as an active member of our parent group. We are indebted to the band parents for keeping us out of debt. This allows the band director the time to teach music and work with students ~ the most important part of our success.
